This course is designed to ensure that those people employed as line managers understand safety requirements, and for them to be able to assess systems for safety in their departments and to enable them to introduce new controls and apply changes to make their departments work more safely.

What will I learn?

The delegates, on completion of the course, should be able to:

  • Distinguish specific hazards both generally and from their companys perspective.
  • Describe the statutory requirements for reporting and processes for checking non-reporting.
  • Describe procedures and techniques used in management reviews.
  • Demonstrate a practical understanding of a quantitative risk technique and the information required for records.
  • Outline appropriate health and safety legislation, codes of practice, guidance notes and information sources.
  • Define workplace precautions hierarchies and the criteria for the types of workplace precautions and controls.
  • Outline the main provisions of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 and the Management of the Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999.
  • Explain the parts of a recognised safety management system and understand the role of risk assessment within the system.
  • Define hazards and risks and describe the legal requirements for risk assessment.
  • Prepare and use active monitoring checklists and implement schedules for active monitoring, recording and analysing records.
  • Explain the reason for and techniques of a health and safety audit.
